And, let the ‘Tony’ buzz begin…
As previously reported by U.B. on 11/18/13:
This is season could definitely use some musical revivals (if the Tonys rule it as one). As previously predicted by U.B., the success of Encores! summer concert staging of Violet has translated to a commercial run for the show. A source has informed us that the Bunheads star has reportedly cancelled a Florida concert date in the spring to make way for Violet, though no official announcement has been made.
Violet, based on the short story “The Ugliest Pilgrim” by Doris Betts is composed by Jeanine Tesori, with book and lyrics by Brian Crawley. The country/gospel/ blues inspired score follows a young woman who embarks on a religious pilgrimage to a televangelist in Tulsa, in hopes of being healed of her disfiguring scar from an ax wound. Violet was only seen Off-Broadway, for a limited run at Playwrights Horizons, opening on March 11, 1997, running for less than a month. But the show still managed to nab the Drama Critics Circle Award, and Lucille Lortel Awards as Best Musical.
