It was a packed sold-out (two show), one-night only event at Catalina Grill in Los Angeles, and Ms. Hilty’s “best friends” in the room were her husband (in the band), and bucket of Ricola (kept in a brandy snifter next to the piano).
Hilty was forced to start the 8pm show a half hour late, as the venue was still seating people. By 9:20 she began to wrap it up. Hilty never announced that she was sick; but it was clear that the SMASH star was struggling to get through certain points. On some higher notes and in some ballads, it was clear that the poor girl had a bad cold (though, looking fabulous!) Frankly, we need to give her a TON of credit. Much like the great pros of Broadway’s past, Hilty showed up for the adoring crowd despite her personal discomfort. Instead, she gave us what we wanted, hits from Wicked, (lots of) SMASH, and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes; not to mention some covers, including a charming “Rainbow Connection”, and a couple of great selections from her latest album. At one point, Hilty teamed up with husband Brian Gallagher on guitar to bang out one of his country songs. (Megan sounds GREAT singing country, if you haven’t heard her, listen to the 9 to 5 Cast Recording for a sample.)
At one point, Ms. Hilty veered off her set list saying “It’s my show, I can do what I want!”. LOL, indeed she can. Regardless of illness, she rocked. Out of the 10(ish) songs in her set, Hilty’s stand-out was “They Just Keep Moving the Line” from SMASH‘s Bombshell, which she completely nailed, the crowd goes wild. We were sorry she wasn’t feeling well, but SO glad she came out for her peeps. We hope she crawled into a BIG bath tub after that 10:30pm show. At one point she popped a cough drop saying “I’m gonna have to do this next one with a Ricola in my mouth… think of it as “percussion”!”
