The first half of Jerry Herman’s Mame which originally starred Angela Lansbury, and Bea Arthur, is set during Prohibition times; with drinking and merriment as a big part Mame’s life, when her nephew, Patrick Dennis, shows on her doorstep. Four different libations are referenced throughout the libretto, which one is not?
A. Pousse Cafe
B. a martini
C. A recent vintage (with fresh bubbles)
Scroll past Bea Arthur, and Angela Lansbury in a fabulous 1990’s reunion to see the answer.
There is no “Pousse Cafe” mentioned in Mame but it is referenced in the libretto of another Jerry Herman show, Dear World, which also starred Lansbury. The mint julep, is of course, in the number “Mame”. The recent bubbly vintage is in “Open A New Window”. Scotch is in “It’s Today”. And Patrick knew how to make Mr. Babcock a “perfect martini”. Oops! We almost forgot the “Upson Downs” which is not, in fact, an actual cocktail.
